This Celtics unit in 2016 will be primed to make a splash in the regular season and based on my predictions, will make the playoffs most likely as a sixth seed. Each playoff team has moderate success and they all do it in different ways. The Celtics did not have any 20-point scorers on the roster last season, although Isaiah Thomas did average 19.0 ppg after being acquired at the deadline. Next season however, I do think there will be a few players who will average 20 ppg and the team will overall score more points this season on a nightly basis.
1. David Lee:
David Lee came over in a trade about a month ago from the Golden State Warriors. The trade was a smart negotiation that Danny Ainge certainly got the better end of. Lee was a very prolific scorer on the New York Knicks and had many seasons where he averaged 20 ppg and 10 rpg. He also had great success in Golden State until last season, when he saw a very decreased role. Expect Lee to be a focal point in the offense and the main guy putting up point’s night in and night out.
2. Isaiah Thomas:
Even though he comes off the bench, Thomas will put up a lot of points this season and I predict he will be the second best scorer. Thomas is a fast, scoring point guard who can drive to the basket at will and still shoot an impressive clip from behind the arc. He also can score in bunches and does need 30 minutes a night to score 20 points.
3. Marcus Smart:
I think Marcus Smart will make a huge jump this upcoming season. He is a very physical player and has great size at the point guard position, something his predecessor Rajon Rondo certainly lacked. I predict he is the wild card candidate to lead the team in scoring, but either way he will still be up there and I predict he will average between 16-18 ppg while playing significant minutes and being a focal point in the offence.
