Since the deconstruction of The Big Three era in Boston, rivalries have become virtually non-existent. Part of the issue is that other teams that used to be our rivals have fallen off the radar, such as the Lakers. I think that within the next few years, the Celtics will have a few new rivals and I believe it could be one of these four teams.
1. The Milwaukee Bucks:
The Bucks have shown great signs of improvement within the past few years and have a few great young cornerstones in Jabari Parker and the “Greek Freak”. We are on a similar pace with them and I could see us meeting in a playoff series against them as soon as at the end of this season.
2. Philadelphia 76ers:
Since we have had a history with the Sixers, I would love to see a newfound rivalry. Even though they have been tanking for the last few years they do have young talent and could eventually be really good. The timetable for that is probably similar to the Celtics becoming contenders so down the road we could definitely see some intense playoff series against them.
3. The Miami Heat:
We had a very competitive history with the Heat when LeBron played for them for three years in a row in the playoffs. The Heat did have a down year this past season, but will be primed to be one of the top teams in the east next season and beyond with the off-season moves they have made. I personally would love to see a Celtics-Heat rivalry reboot.
4. The Los Angeles Clippers:
Even though the Clippers are out west, it is fairly obvious why they made the list. With all the ex-Celtics on the team, the two times we play them are highly anticipated matches and as the Celtics improve it will only get more competitive. If down the road the two teams were to play each other in the NBA Finals that would solidify what could be Boston vs. LA reborn.
