The Patriots have clearly won the offseason at this point by acquiring Brandin Cooks, Kony Ealy, Lawrence Guy and Stephon Gilmore. They also re-signed Dont'a Hightower which was arguably one of the most important moves of the year. Even with all of these acquisitions, the question still stands, is there anything left to do this off season? I say yes, This might be the greedy Patriots fan in me coming out but I honestly think they need to address a few more things.
First off, they really have to sign Butler. Malcolm Butler is a top 10 corner in the NFL, and honestly you could even make an argument for him to be in the top 5. Malcolm Butler paired with Stephon Gilmore could be the best cornerback pairing in the entire league. Malcolm also has to be one of the most reliable guys on that defense. He never takes plays off and I believe he should be paid for the hard work he puts in. Bill, we realize you may have to overpay a little bit, but please just bring Butler back.
Secondly, I think they should trade my boy Jimmy G. I would hate to see him go, I really would, but if he’s worth what people are saying he is, then I think we have to make a move. Kraft also said yesterday that Brady wants to play 6-7 more years. It would honestly just be a waste of Jimmy’s career if Tom even plays for 4-5 more years. Jimmy would start on a majority of NFL teams and he deserves to shine. I would love to have Jimmy be the QB for the future but not at the price he will want, especially with Tom Brady not thinking of retirement anytime soon.
The Patriots need a long term running back. With really only AP left in Free Agency I think they need to shift their focus to the Draft. The running back class this year is extremely good, one of the best classes in recent memory. With a lot of depth in the later rounds I don’t necessarily think the Pats need a first rounder to get a great running back. I mean don’t get me wrong, I would love to have Fournette or Cook on the Patriots. All I’m saying is if the Pats can’t get one of them it's not the end of the world. If the Pats get back into the late first or early second rounds they could pick up Christian Mccaffrey. He’s one of the most versatile guys in the draft class. You could put him in the slot and he’ll do an amazing job with his quickness and his ability to catch the football. There is also Alvin Kamara, D’onta Foreman, James Connor, Joe Mixon and Donnel Pumphrey. With such a deep class, I think they’ll have no problem picking up a stud back this year.
I would also like to add a Linebacker or an Offensive Lineman but these are really the biggest moves the Pats have to make. I am extremely confident that the 6th Lombardi is in sight but all of these moves just bring them that much closer.
