An early February tradition showing signs of an early spring just happened and I’m not talking about Punxsutawney Phil.
Nope, Truck Day was yesterday and Spring Training is yet another day closer, which means meaningful baseball is right behind it.
The 53-foot Jet Blue truck was packed chock full of seeds, gum and uniforms for the 2016 Red Sox to start Spring Training with.
Although the truck isn’t due to arrive until Saturday, many Red Sox players have already made their way down to Fort Myers to start some unofficial workouts.
Peter Abraham reported that 18 Red Sox were present today running around the field taking batting practice and fielding ground balls in preparations for the rest of the pitchers and catchers to join them in a week.
The two-and-a-half day haul falls on the shoulders of Al Hartz, who will be making the drive for the 18th straight year. Hartz and I share common stomping grounds of Milford, Massachusetts which sits a mere 40 miles outside of Fenway Park (Rock on Hawk Nation).
Like most Milfordians, Hartz doesn’t like the big spot light and prefers to go and do his job as opposed to spending time doing the interviews he needs to do due to the hardcore fan base of the Boston Red Sox.
“I’m not comfortable with all the attention and all that,” he said in a conversation with Boston.com’s Chris Greenberg. “I’m always looking to getting all of that out of the way.”
Once Hartz arrives, Spring Training will be in full swing only days after and we will finally be able to see this new Red Sox squad that shows so much promise.
This year is shaping up to be a big year in every sense of the phrase and it started the day David Price signed to come here. That same day, I called that Red Sox will win the World Series and now I’m making it public and you can now say that you heard it here first.
Once we can get excited about Xander making a play or Ortiz mashing one over the monster, all the preseason story lines will cease to grab the headlines and those plays will take them over. Truck Day is a big step towards that day but until then; February 18th can’t come any sooner.
