No, Tom, the “privledge” has truly been ours.
Look, this is the type of stuff that other fan bases don’t get. The “Us Against the World” stuff. The “F-U Tour”. I’m not saying New Englanders know more about sports or football specifically than say, New Yorkers or the fine ladies and gentlemen from Philadelphia for example.
What I’m saying is no fan base has the connection with their franchise player than New Englanders have with TB12. It’s tough to explain and even more difficult to fully grasp. He’s not a local kid; he’s a Cali boy. In a blue-collar city that appreciates grit and grime, Tom is drop dead gorgeous and has a model wife.
On the surface to the casual fan, he’s everything that induces jealous loathing. In reality, however, he’s one of the most classy and team-oriented athletes of all time. Not to mention, one of the most accomplished. As the 199th pick in the NFL draft, he’s truly had to scratch and claw for every accolade he’s ever achieved. He’s earned it all, including our unconditional loyalty.
That is why the loss last weekend stung so agonizingly. We really wanted one for the thumb this year. We wanted it for ourselves sure, but first and foremost, we wanted it for Tom. The way the national media and public treated and portrayed him last offseason sickens me to this day and it should sicken every one of you. The things that were written, the conclusions that were made. It was comical, the entire thing.
First off, “Deflategate” was a failed sting op. That’s been proven. Second off, try telling Floyd Mayweather he can’t break in his boxing gloves before a fight…I digress. Unfortunately, the vision of Tom accepting the Lombardi in one hand and flipping Roger the bird in the other won’t come to fruition…at least until next season. Who am I kidding? The guy would have smiled, probably even hugged that pea-brained dingus.
Congratulations to the Denver fans, your team freaking earned it. There’s no question about that. Congrats to even those fans who were just rooting against Tom, and against the Patriots.
I’ll say this though: as I’ve learned, as long as TB12 is at the helm, chances are pretty good the Pats will be playing deep into January again next season. So don’t let your guard down, because whatever team the Patriots happen to face this time around next season could use the extra fans.
“The road to the next one is paved with seasons like this one!
