When there is smoke, there's fire. For months, the rumors of a "super fight" between "The Notorious" Conor McGregor and Floyd "Money" Mayweather have been the talk of the town in the combat sports community (yawn). After winning his second UFC belt in November, McGregor began looking for the biggest payday possible and it didn't take long for him to start talking smack to the then-retired boxing great. Since both men love their money, it drew interest from Mayweather's team as well. The only thing the public seems to be waiting on is the date of the event. I however, hope this fight doesn't happen for a few reasons.
McGregor is a tremendous boxer in the sport of MMA. But when it comes to stepping into a ring with a 49-0 pro, it's a whole new world. McGregor only boxed on the Irish amateur circuit, meaning he's never boxed in a professional bout in his life. So why do I keep getting told that he somehow is going to knockout an undefeated legend in his first professional bout? Because his fans are passionate, loyal, and crazy at times. I really don't think this fight is about proving who is better because, in my opinion, we know Mayweather would frustrate and tire McGregor to a unanimous decision victory. Do some of these fans think McGregor is the only powerful puncher Mayweather has had to worry about? Mayweather has beaten Canelo Alvarez, Shane Mosley, and Arturo Gatti, to name a few. The only way McGregor could possibly win is by getting in Mayweather's head and baiting him to make a mistake. Since Mayweather has been around the block a time or two, I think he would know all of the tricks of the trade.
This fight is purely about making both of these guys a ton of money. From McGregor's point of view, what's there to lose? Nothing, because he would be boxing a man that no one has been able to defeat in a professional ring. Win or lose, he will make millions and seeing as Mayweather isn't exactly known as a hard puncher, McGregor probably isn't too nervous about the knockout either.
With McGregor taking a venture into the boxing world, he has put yet another UFC division on hold. In the lightweight division, there are 2 guys on huge winning streaks in Tony Ferguson (pictured) and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Since McGregor doesn't feel the need to defend his belt, these well-deserved contenders are forced to wait to fight for a title they have coveted for their whole careers. This is annoying and unfair. I don't want to pay 100 dollars to watch a "superfight" where I know what's going to happen. I'd rather spend money to watch McGregor defend his title against Ferguson or Nurmagomedov in fights where anything could happen at any given time. Despite me having a ton of respect for McGregor, I think he needs to stay in his lane with this one. There are too many fights for him in the Octagon that we all really want to see. Instead of getting toyed with on pay-per-view for millions, do what a champion should do and defend your belt against the toughest dudes in your division. I'm sick of waiting for it to happen. Put this fight rumor to rest.
