According to the Providence Journal, the Patriots have shown interest in former St. Louis defensive end Chris Long. While many of the free agents that the Patriots have been associated with as of late have been relatively decent complimentary players, Chris Long is certainly not that.
The past two years have been tough for long, as he has been limited to a total of 18 games, with only four sacks. However, from 2011 to 2013, Long started all 48 regular season games, registering 33 sacks and 89 tackles. It would not come to the surprise of anyone if Long is brought in to New England on a "prove it" type of deal.
With Jabaal Sheard, Chandler Jones, and Rob Ninkovich all entering the final year of their respective contracts, the Patriots could be looking to provide some much-needed insurance on the edge this season. Signing Long, and perhaps trading Chandler Jones for a couple draft picks, could be a great move for the Patriots of the future.
