Earlier today, it was announced that the Detroit Lions had agreed in principle with former Cincinnati Bengal WR Marvin Jones to a contract with an average annual value in the neighborhood of $8 million. Regarded as the best wide receiver on the market, Jones had 65 passes for 816 yards and four touchdowns last season with the Bengals.
It should come to no surprise that Jones cashed in with the Lions, as they lost Calvin Johnson to retirement just one day ago.
However, the biggest surprise was that Jones' final decision came between the Detroit Lions and, wait for it, the New England Patriots. As potentially the largest AAV signing in the wide receiver market this offseason, the Patriots have shown that they are willing to spend this offseason, which is something extremely un-Patriot-like.
The Patriots are reportedly also interested in Miami Dolphins WR Rishard Matthews, and have already reached out to former Bengals receiver Mohamed Sanu.
We will continue to update you as the day progresses. Stay tuned.
