For the first time in the second half of the season, the Boston Red Sox will be losing a series. After two wildly disappointing games, the Red Sox will be looking to salvage the final game of this series, as Eduardo Rodriguez takes the hill. This is quietly a massive start for E-Rod, as he could be pushed out of the starting rotation if he fails to deliver yet again with the Trade Deadline looming. It has become quite apparent that the Red Sox need more high-end starting pitching, and Rodriguez could be the odd man out, whether that be through a demotion to Triple-A Pawtucket or as a centerpiece in a trade.
On the season, Rodriguez is 2-4 with a 6.70 ERA, but has been better since being recalled from Pawtucket after the All-Star break. In 12.1 innings of work since returning to Boston, Rodriguez has allowed three runs, which is not terrible considering where he was at the beginning of the season.
To counter E-Rod, the Tigers will be sending their own young and promising hurler to the rubber in Michael Fulmer. On the season, Fulmer is 9-2 with a 2.41 ERA, but struggled last Friday against the Chicago White Sox. Fulmer relinquished four runs in the fifth inning and was quickly chased out of the game and handed a no-decision.
In some quick lineup notes, Aaron Hill will be playing third base today, as Travis Shaw will go over to first base and Hanley Ramirez will get the day off. Ramirez has been swinging the hot bat as of late, but Aaron Hill desperately needs to get some at-bats and get things going. Since being acquired by the Red Sox, Hill has only four hits and two RBIs and seems to have lost the confidence of manager John Farrell. Hopefully Hill can get things going and prove to the Red Sox that it was the right decision to trade for him.
