After dropping the first game in a three game series, the Red Sox look to recover from last night’s dismal performance. Last night, the Rays stopped their 11-game losing streak while the Red Sox continued to struggle. They’ve gone 4-6 in their last 10 games.
Rick Porcello will take the mound against Chris Archer. Porcello is 8-2 on the year with a 3.92 ERA. After a hot start to the season, Porcello has started to taper off and look more like the pitcher we saw in 2015. He has won his last 2 decisions, but given up 6 earned runs in 11.1 innings pitched. The thing about Slick Rick is, you kind of know what you’re going to get for a pitching line. I’d expect to see Porcello go around 6 innings giving up 4 runs. This means that the Red Sox offense will have to step up and put some runs on the board.
Chris Archer is 4-10 on the year with a 4.70 ERA. Additionally, he has lost his last 3 decisions. With the Rays in the basement of the AL East, look for the team to be sellers at the deadline. The Rays have long been a team to trade off assets when they’re the most valuable. Archer is on a cheap contract and would return a kings ransom to the Rays.
Tonight the Red Sox will send out their regular starters with the exception of Xander Bogaerts, who has been given the night off. Marco Hernandez will slot in at shortstop. Brock Holt continues to make progress on his recovery from a concussion, but Bryce Brentz will play left field tonight. The complete probable lineups can be viewed below:
