After a stinker by Eduardo Rodriguez, the Red Sox look to get back on track as they welcome the Seattle Mariners to Fenway Park for a weekend series. In a somewhat surprising move, the Red Sox have called up Roenis Elias to make his first regular season start in a Red Sox uniform tonight. Elias will have some added motivation, as he is facing his former team in the Seattle Mariners. Because of an easy schedule, the Red Sox have not needed a fifth starter since June 1, but will now be playing close to every day from here on out. While Elias is young and full of potential, he has made 49 career starts, all of which were with the Mariners. With the Red Sox running out of options at starting pitching, hopefully Elias can figure it out and be effective.
Seattle will be sending out Hisashi Iwakuma, who has performed above and beyond as of late. With Felix Hernandez sidelined at the moment, Iwakuma has raised his game, pitching to a 4-1 record with a 3.71 ERA in his last five starts. Fortunately for Boston, Iwakuma has struggled against Boston in the past, pitching to a 0-1 record with a 10.20 ERA in four career starts.
