After a tough loss last night for the Red Sox, both teams will be back at it tonight for the third contest of this four-game set. Boston's bullpen, specifically Fernando Abad, let David Price down last night, but hopefully John Farrell and company do not lose confidence in the newly acquired lefty. With last night's loss, the Red Sox now sit in third place in the American League East and are now only a half game ahead of the Detroit Tigers for the second wildcard spot.
The Red Sox will be sending their most consistent starter to the mound in Rick Porcello. The veteran right hander has been a rock for the Red Sox this season, currently possessing a 14-2 record and a 3.47 ERA. He has not registered a loss since May and is fresh off a complete game victory against the Anaheim Angels. Since coming off the disabled list last season, Porcello has a 3.37 ERA and looks to be the pitcher the Red Sox thought they were getting when they acquired him from the Detroit Tigers.
To counter Porcello, the Mariners will be sending Hisashi Iwakuma to the mound, who has been up and down all season. Last time out against the Chicago Cubs, Iwakuma registered a season-low three innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Additionally, Iwakuma claimed to have some shoulder tightness that limited him in his last time out. Nevertheless, Iwakuma has been one of the more consistent starts in the Mariners rotation.
As you can see below, the lineup tonight looks drastically different than yesterday. Brock Holt will be replacing Dustin Pedroia, who has the night off. Additionally, Travis Shaw will be getting the start at first base, as Hanley Ramirez is out of the lineup with an injured wrist. Reportedly, Han-Ram was walking down the steps out of the dugout last night after the teams defeat and fell. While I am not sure I believe this story, metal cleats on stairs is never a good idea. Lastly, we will see Andrew Benintendi get his first start in a Red Sox uniform. The youngster made his Major League appearance last night, going 0-2 at the plate.
