We've been seeing professional athletes who have failed at their previous/current sports, and have decided to jump ship and try to play something different. Most notably Tim Tebow, who spent 2 years without being on an NFL roster before deciding to pursue a career in professional baseball at age 30. Unfortunately, Tebow's "dream" seems like a long shot, as he's posted a sub .200 batting average in rookie ball and in winter ball.
But seeing Tebow's pursuit got me wondering what professional athletes could jump ship to another sport and actually succeed.
Here's who I thought:
MLB: Miguel Cabrera - Offensive Lineman (NFL)
(ABC 7 Chicago)
Miguel Cabrera is one of the most feared hitters in the game, and has been for quite some time now. In 2012, he was the first player to win the triple crown since 1967. But looking at the build Miguel Cabrera, you can see he's gigantic.. He's 6'4" 240 pounds of absolute man. And the power he generates from his lower half is second to none. The only knock on Miggy is his speed, which is why he most likely would be an offensive lineman, rather than a defensive lineman. He has the strength to throw people around, but he definitely would struggle getting after the QB, whereas, as an O-Lineman, his pure strength and footwork could really make it hard for the opposition to get in the backfield.
NBA: LeBron James - Tight End (NFL)
This is something that has been talked about before. But LeBron James has the strength and speed to be a force in the NFL as a tight end. His height and weight are the only things keeping him from being a wide receiver. He's just too big, but his speed would be like no other. I could see him being a faster Gronk. The only issue is, we've seen LeBron when he doesn't get touched, how is he going to respond to ACTUALLY getting hit? In the words of Brad Pitt in Moneyball, "adapt or die." Seeing the 6'8" 250 pound LeBron James catching passes from the likes of Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Big Ben, etc. would be insane.
NFL: Odell Beckham Jr. - Point Guard (NBA)
Plain and simple, Odell Beckham Jr. could probably play any sport and still find success in some capacity. He is an absolute freak for a 5'11" 198 pound man. Beckham has posted videos on social media of him throwing down monster dunks, doing insane dribble moves. But the physical stature of OBJ would be perfect for the NBA. I actually think Beckham, with his speed and athleticism, could play in the NBA at a high level... and I actually think he could be a top 10 player in the league if he played.
NHL: Nathan MacKinnon - Running Back (NFL)
It was actually tough for me to come up with a hockey player that could play another sport. Because all of the physical guys aren't NFL linebacker size, and all of the fast players aren't really physically built to endure other sports except for maybe baseball. So I spent about 15 minutes thinking of who is built like a football player with really good speed. And the guy that came to mind was Avalanche center, Nathan MacKinnon. MacKinnon is 6'0" tall and weighs in at 205 pounds. To go on top of build, MacKinnon has insane speed and has great finesse moves. Put that all together, and you've got yourself a pretty damn good NFL running back.
