Due to the fact that I live in England, I was only able to watch the first half of the preseason game against Greenbay (due to the time difference the first half finished at 2am) hence why I have dubbed this a shallow review.
To start things off I’m going to talk about Jimmy Garropolo, from what I saw in the first half he was pretty solid, threw some good throws, most of his incompletions weren’t his fault, Josh Boyce frequently failed to get separation against Clinton Dix. One thing that I did notice was that he didn’t scramble, I’m not sure if McDaniels and Belichick have told him not to do so, or if he has other reasons. Garropolo’s protection was pretty poor causing him to get sacked a couple of times. I know it’s only the early days, but, surrounded by starters I believe Garropolo will do just fine (you can hold me to that if you wish).
For the defense, they looked quite good, secondary was a bit woeful, mainly Logan Ryan and Tavon Wilson, I enjoyed the pressure we got on the QB. Jabaal Sheard, Trey Flowers and Robert McClain really stood out for me and I look forward to seeing them in with the other starters (thats if they aren’t cut of course). The pressure we caused helped put my mind at ease about the defense this year. Malcolm Brown also looked strong.
As for cuts, I would prioritize cutting: Josh Boyce, Logan Ryan and Tavon Wilson. Josh Boyce also need to be cut. We’ve had the guy for what(?), three years now and he still looks awful? I personally think he’s a waste of a roster spot, comparing him to someone like Aaron Dobson who has, although been injured, shown ability and promise when healthy.
Although early days, I do see promise in both Garropolo and the defense. Which leads me to believe we may actually win more games than I earlier stated if Brady is out of action.
