The last of golf's 4 major championships tees off tomorrow from Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. Golf's fourth major returns to the Straits Course for the first time since 2010 when Martin Kaymer defeated Bubba Watson in a three whole playoff to claim his first major championship. Dustin Johnson just missed out on the playoff after receiving a two stroke penalty for grounding his club in a bunker. Here are a few players to watch this tournament weekend.
The number 2 player in the world has to come into the PGA Championship as the betting favorite. Spieth won the first two legs of the grand slam before finishing the Open Championship in a tie for fourth. No player has dominated the game like Spieth since Tiger Woods of the early 2000s. Spieth has never made a cut at the PGA Championship, but expect that to end this week.
Dustin Johnson is my favorite to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy Sunday night. Johnson is one of the longest players on the tour which gives him a huge advantage over most of the field. The x-factor for Dustin Johnson this week is his putter. If Johnson putts well, he has a great chance of avenging the disappointment of the 2010 Championship.
Sleeper: Jimmy Walker
Jimmy walker is ranked 3rd in the Fedex Cup Standings. He has won two events in 2015 so far. Walker leads the Tour in the strokes gained putting stat. This stat compares a players putting performance to the tour average. Putting is arguable the most important aspect of the game. A player can save or lose the most strokes on the putting green. Expect to see Jimmy Walker in contention this weekend, especially if he putts to his 2015 averages.
Player to note: Tiger Woods
Ranked 194th in the Fedex Cup standings, Woods needs to have a very strong performance if he wants to make the playoffs, which start in two weeks time. Woods need to rank 125th, or lower in order to qualify.
