It's that time of the year again! I will be highlighting some of the players I would like the Patriots to pick in this year's draft. We have already highlighted some players and reported some private work outs, so be sure to follow us for updates! On the right hand side of this page, the "2016 NFL Draft" category will keep track of all potential Patriots players.
The Bill Belichick-Rutgers pipeline may be in full-effect come draft day. After a gaudy junior year of 1,068 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, Carroo decided to stay in school for his senior season and may have hurt his draft stock. Although he did have 39 receptions for 809 yards and 10 touchdowns, a high-ankle sprain and domestic violence/sexual assault case plagued his final season in Rutgers.
Nevertheless, Carroo has fantastic hands and is able to adjust in the air in order to catch balls that are not perfectly thrown. Similar to Will Fuller, Carroo is a home run threat, as 31 of his 122 catches went for 25-plus yards.
It will be interesting to see if Carroo can continue this type of production in the NFL, as the Rutgers-style of offense benefitted his playing style, and he played with the same quarterback for eight years (Gary Nova, per NFL.com). Unfortunately, Carroo does not possess blazing speed, and will have trouble generating separation from quicker defensive backs. Additionally, as I mentioned before, the domestic violence incident is concerning to NFL scouts, especially with the scandals in the past couple of years (Greg Hardy, Ray Rice, etc.).
While there are multiple red flags surrounding Carroo, he has the talent to be solid player. As a projected middle-round pick (3rd round-4th round), the Patriots may decide to take a flyer on a project that could turn into a legitimate deep threat and potential starter down the road.
