Adrian Peterson just hit the market and fans everywhere want him on their team. So, should the Pats pursue him or test their luck in the draft? Let’s cover our most important free agents to see.
Patriots' salaray cap: $62,481,093
Dont’a Hightower- He is the stable linebacker of our defense. Even when we traded Jamie Collins to Cleveland, he stayed steady and locked up on zone coverage. He is a must-keep for our defense although he just lost out on the franchise tag he was supposed to get last year so if he hits the market he will definitely get paid stupid money.
Market Value: 4yr $40.7M
Martellus Bennett- He was a great saver this year coming in at the last hour after Gronk’s season-ending injury and making incredible plays in the Super Bowl. But his offseason persona seems to be taking over way too much. He also doesn’t care too much about winning compared to getting paid which he will be.
Market Value: 3yr $18M
Legarrette Blount- He had his best year yet setting career- and franchise-records. He was reliable but still not what we need. He still can’t play the right style for his body type. Luckily, we still have Lewis and White and possibly a star from the draft coming in.
Market Value: 3yr $13.2M
Logan Ryan- A solid CB, he’s been doubling the secondary with Butler the past couple years and made some very crucial plays. He’s been super reliable but not the superstar we need. He’s already getting paid big so I could see him getting released. We could keep him but if he does test the market I see him getting paid as much or more as these other guys
Market Value: 5yr $72.2M
Defensively, we may need some linebackers for reassurance. Kiko Alonso from Miami would be extremely manageable to get, Rolando McClain from Dallas, or Pittsburgh’s Jarvis Jones and James Harrison. Offensively, when it comes to replacing Blount and Bennett, that could mostly be done in the draft. Although we could get Danny Woodhead to return, or grab Jamaal Charles or Eddie Lacy. Lacy actually uses his power correctly. As for AP, we definitely do not need to pursue him. He’s on the wrong side of 30 and would cost way too much. There’s plenty of cheaper FA’s and there is always the draft. Free agency is where we thrive. It’s where Belichick gets unsung heroes who can make plays for half the price.
