With host Tiger Woods on site for the final round of the Quicken Loans National, Billy Hurley fired a final round 69 to win by 3 shots over 53 year old Vijay Singh. Hurley, who grew up in Virginia and attended the Naval Academy, won his home tournament. Hurley was granted a sponsor's exemption from Tiger Woods. Hurley won with ease. He showed his mental toughness by holding off major champions Ernie Els and Vijay Singh. This mental toughness can be attributed to his time spend in the service. Hurley’s family was on hand to share the win. With his runner-up finish, Vijay Singh earned a spot in next month's British Open.
In other golf related news, severe flooding has recently ravaged West Virginia. This flood has forced the PGA Tour to cancel the Greenbrier Classic, which was scheduled to be held in a few weeks. The Old White TPC sustained significant damage that is unfixable given the amount of time before the tournament. The Greenbrier was scheduled to be the final qualifier before the British Open. Alternate qualifications for the Open have been moved to Nevada. Hopefully the PGA Tour can return to West Virginia in 2017. The Greenbrier is still under contract with the Tour.
The next stop on Tour is the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. This WGC is being held in Akron, Ohio at Firestone CC. Shane Lowry won at Firestone last year and is expected to defend his victory. Also expected to compete include Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth.
