In the 2011 Masters, Rory McIlroy started the fourth and final round with a 4-shot lead. On the 10th hole, McIlroy hit a snap hook into the left woods near Butler Cabin. This lead to a triple bogey and eventually a final score of 80. McIlroy believes this was his best chance at winning the Masters. That year, he did not play in the Wednesday Par 3 contest. McIlroy has taken this approach this season as well with the hope of staying completely focused on winning the green jacket.
McIlroy has won each of the other 3 majors, including the 2011 U.S. Open just months removed from his epic Masters meltdown.
In a practice round on Monday, McIlroy aced the 170 yard par 3 16th. I’m sure McIlroy would have rather saved that shot the tournament, but making an ace is an incredible feat.
Although McIlroy has not won this season and struggled at times, he has shown flashes of brilliance. He took a 3-shot lead into Sunday at Doral but faltered down the stretch. He has also struggled with his putting which has forced him to change to the left hand low grip. Putting is extremely important at Augusta and I believe this change will make a huge difference for Rory.
McIlroy’s last start was at the Dell Match Play, where he was defeated in the semi finals by Jason Day. This top 4 finish is very encouraging weeks before the Masters tees off.
I'm picking Rory McIlroy to finally get all aspects of his game together and come Sunday, leave Augusta National wearing his new green jacket.
