It is more common for teams to take back-to-back first round QBs than it is for the Patriots to pick a RB in the first round. However, they might finally do it. They have been in need of a star RB who will be there for several years for quite some time and McCaffrey can do multiple things and come in right away and get it done.
He might be one of the most versatile backs taken in the first round in quite some time. His upside is almost limitless as he can do so many things.
Here is his combine numbers as listed on NFL.com:
Height/Weight- 5`11 202lbs
Arms: 30 in
Hands: 9 in
Vertical Jump- 37 in
Broad Jump- 121 in
Bench Press- 10 Reps
The best thing about McCaffrey is his ability to see the field with is quick lateral movement. Combine that with his WR-like true catching ability and he is a lethal 3-down weapon for the Patriots. He will be all of the RB on the roster combined, he even has the between the tackles and goal line big-back ability of Blount. That is a very underrated part of his game, when you watch his tape you will see him attack defenders and run through them rather than around him.
His drills and speed times matched up perfectly with what the tape showed and that was a good thing. Many had concerns if he was just quick and not fast, he showed he was both and had great power and dexterity in his legs and hips.
There was 10 different players used on PR/KR for the Patriots last season with 0 touchdowns and there was not one single player with more than 10 returns. This is clearly an area of need for the Patriots with a lack of consistency and yardage. McCaffrey will come in and instantly be both the KR/PR with the other RB on the roster he will have a chance to do that and not have to play every down at RB and run his body down year one. He will be able to build himself into the role and perfect his role. Special Teams is maybe the most important part of football its a sudden change of possession and having great field position or being able to score with out putting your offense on the field is the most under-rated part of football.
As for rushing the Patriots were 7th in yards, 5th in TD`s, 7th in yards per game, but at the same time they were 24th in yards per attempt, 3rd in most fumbles, and 3rd in attempts.
12 players had rushing yards for the team last year, but they mainly rotated through 3 in Blount, Lewis and White. McCaffrey is more talented than all three of them and can do the exact same things as Lewis and White with better abilities. Blount was at almost 300 carries with an below average sub-4 yards per attempt. When you have that many attempts with that many fumbles and lack of yards per attempt for the team there needs to be a change.
McCaffrey will be a perfect addition to play all 3-downs and do whatever is asked of him. With so many options and things he can do, he is quite possibly the most versatile offensive player in this draft. If the Patriots finally cave and take a RB in the first round McCaffrey looks to have a very long and great career, even if he only does 3rd down and KR/PR they will get more production than they would pay for at the 32nd pick.
