To many, this may seem like a non move. Many former GMs are hired by clubs to "advise" or "oversee" teams during the offseason.
However, after all the reports that we have heard since the announcement of Larry Lucchino stepping down, one has to think that he may be here to stay. While Sam Kennedy has been given his position, he has openly admitted to not knowing much about baseball. Therefore, a President of Baseball Ops-type of role could be intriguing to both sides.
Its hard to assess Dipoto, as he did not spend much time with the Diamondbacks and was not in a good situation with the Angels. By all reports, he had a serious power struggle with manager Mike Scioscia. Angels owner Arte Moreno sided with Scioscia and effectively boxed Dipoto out.
It is also important to note that before he was the GM for the Diamondbacks and Angels, Dipoto was a scout for the Red Sox.
Regardless, Dipoto will add a good baseball head to this staff, even if it is only for a couple of months.
