Jason Day was able to win on tour for the second consecutive week. Last week, he went wire to wire at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and this week won at the WGC Dell Matchplay. With the win, Jason Day moves up to number 1 in the Official World Golf rankings. Day was victorious in the 64-player field by first defeating Rory McIlroy 1-Up early Sunday. In the championship match Sunday afternoon, Day was able to easily handle Louis Oosthuizen 5&4. Day will be taking next week off, with one week to go before the Masters. With his 2 consecutive victories, Day goes into the Masters as the early favorite.
As for the regular tour event in Puerto Rico, Tony Finau was able to capture his first career PGA Tour win. Finau, 26, won on the third hole of a sudden death playoff against Steve Marino. With the win, Finau is exempt on the PGA Tour until the conclusion of the 2018 season. He unfortunately, did not gain entry into the Masters. Finau recognized his victory on Twitter:
Next on the PGA Tour is the Shell Houston Open, which is the final event before The Masters. The Shell Houston Open organizers set the course up difficult with conditions similar to what will be seen at The Masters so that the tournament can serve as a final tune up. Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, and Rickie Fowler are all expected to compete.
