J.J. Watt is the second most dominant NFL defender ever. He’s won 3 Defensive Player of the Year Awards, made 4 All-Pro Teams, and should have won the 2014-2015 NFL Most Valuable Player award. He’s one of the best players of this generation, and you can’t argue with that. But
somehow… His team doesn’t NEED him. He’s logged 20.5 sacks in a season TWICE. Nobody’s ever done that. His three DPOY’s make him the second to do that, only after the #1 Defensive player in NFL history, Lawrence Taylor.
Yet, when he needed back surgery last season, missing the majority of the year, the Texans made the playoffs, and had the number 1 total defense, while being led by… Brock Osweiler. That’s right, the Texans made the playoffs almost entirely on the back of their defense, the defense that didn’t have JJ Watt. Here’s a scalding fucking take: The Texans can ABSOLUTELY afford to lose Watt, who’s possibly
the best player in the league.
Now of course, any team would love to have Justin James on their sideline, and that includes the Texans, even WITH the defense they currently possess. But Houston has GLARING needs at more important positions, and Watt isn’t 22 anymore. He’s 28, and has said that he doesn’t envision playing for much longer. A Watt trade could shake up the NFL, especially if Watt were to go to a team like the Cowboys or Patriots, who both are Super Bowl contenders, and both happen to have talented backup QB’s on the roster.
Now i’m not saying the Texans WILL trade Watt. I think they’re afraid, as he’s a fan favorite, and i don’t imagine much else is keeping Texans fans with the team. But think of the return Houston could get. A potential Watt-for-Good QB trade would be a win-win for everyone. Texans add a stud at their biggest position of need, and the team acquiring Watt obviously gets an uber-talented player with game-changing potential. Again, I would be blown away if a trade like this even gets discussed. But that doesn’t mean it SHOULDN’T happen. And as a fan of the game, it’s fun to think about.
