It's time to face the facts. The 2015 Boston Bruins do not deserve to make the playoffs. They do not deserve to be kept in tact and they don't deserve any praise.
However, before everyone throws their hands up in disgust and screams for justice, take a minute and think about the year that this team had.
Injuries had plagued this team constantly throughout the year, they had no replacements for the loss of guys like Boychuk, Iginla, and Thornton, and to sum it all up, Claude said it best - "have a look at the roster"
I'm not going to go back on my word and say that this team doesn't need a change, because it does. I was and still am very upset at how Chiarelli has managed this team. Do I think he needs to be fired? I don't know. I thought I wanted him gone, but now that it may come to that, I'm not sure if I want it.
You can't argue that what he has done in the past with this team has been awesome. A Stanley cup, a cup final, a presidents trophy. Face it, it's been great.
Now it's time to face the reality of the new NHL. Teams are not supposed to be a force year after year. The Kings are just another example of that - winning the cup last year to not making the playoffs this year.
Yes, I know that there's a couple teams like Detroit who have happen to make it year after year but face it, that's not the norm. If you that's what you want, go cheer for the Wings.
Chiarelli said "things go in cycles, right? I understand that you can't hit it out of the ballpark all the time, and myself included." I couldn't agree more with that statement. It's the reality of the NHL.
Does he need to be fired because they probably won't make the playoffs? Everyone will have their own opinion, but the only people's opinion that matters is Jacobs'.
The one thing that I will hate is if they fire Claude Julien. You can't tell me that firing the best coach that they have had in years is going to change this team? No, instead give Julien the pieces he needs to win. He has proved to be one of the best coaches in Bruins history and you're going to fire him over one bad year, where he wasn't given the right pieces to win?
Taking Boychuk away and nagging injuries crippling the defense of this team was like taking Juliens legs out from under him. Give him the pieces that he needs and he will win. He's already proved that. Take those pieces away and it's not going to go well, that's also just been proved.
This year the Leafs proved that firing the coach doesn't do anything, it actually made them worse.
Julien isn't the only one who has been hurt by Chiarelli's decision making. Tuukka has had a rough year and has people flipping out about his play. Newsflash - you take away defense, goalies are going to appear weaker than usual.
So what would you do?
Fire Chiarelli? Fire Julien? Trade Lucic/Chara? Have a fire sale?
You can agree with me or not, but this is what I think I would do to get prepared for next season:
- Sit down with Chiarelli, give him a time out and build this team together, Neely taking charge
- MAKE TRADES, I want to see Seids, Loui, Smith, and possibly even Chara/Lucic gone
- Do not split up the core: Bergeron, Krecji, Marchand, Pastrnak, Hamilton, Connolly, or even Spooner
- Rebuild the defense, give Julien what he needs for his system to work right
Let me state the obvious before people judge, it's not easy being a GM, I'm just saying some things that I would like to see.
What would you like to see?
