On Saturday, it was announced by the university that Ed Orgeron would have his interim tag officially removed and would take over as the head coach of the LSU Tigers. Following the news, I gave my thoughts on why I believe the program made the right choice and why Orgeron is the perfect guy to take them back to a championship level.
Just a few hours after receiving the news that he had landed his dream job, Coach O was already working hard on the recruiting front trying to bolster the future of this team. Now, just two days later the Louisiana-Native became the head coach of his childhood team, Orgeron has made an absolutely crucial move that will have major impact on the Tigers in the upcoming seasons.
Mid-Tuesday, reports came out from several major news outlets that LSU and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda had agreed to a three-year contract extension. Aranda is considered to be one of, if not the best defensive coordinator in all of college football. Many expected to see him receive calls and offers from teams regarding head coaching vacancies, but Aranda has committed to the Tigers for at least the next few years.
Obviously, keeping the best guy in the country at any position on your team is a huge deal. But on top of that, if Orgeron is to have any real chance of succeeding as the permanent head coach of the LSU Tigers, keeping Aranda in town was something he definitely had to do. While Coach O is a fantastic leader and is the right man for this job, he is by no means a great Xs and Os guy. He relies on his staff in building game plans, and Aranda is at the top of that group.
Bringing back a defensive coordinator usually isn't a move that has massive implications on a team's ability to succeed going forward, but in this case, it absolutely does. Aranda will put out one of the best defenses in the nation, and if the Tigers can get a quality guy to run the offense, watch out.
