Over the course of the last 15 years, the Patriots have been by far the most hated team in the NFL. They’re Super Bowl contenders every single year, and more often than not, they come out world champions. New England are either the best all-around team in the league, or pretty close to it. They’ve had Tom Brady for as long as their dynasty has existed. Typically, they have a solid defense. The Patriots always seem to have star players across the board. So, what about this year? Do they have what it takes to get that fifth Super Bowl Ring?
The answer is a big, fat yes. First of all, the rest of the NFL sucks. This year is worse than past years. The Patriots had a bye week on Week 9, so I decided to thoroughly watch other teams play on Sunday. It was one of the more frustrating things I’d done in a while. I don’t want to be “that guy” and say that this is why ratings are down, but that’s a legitimate argument right now. I give props to anyone who can watch those games from beginning to end all the way through on a weekly basis. Yes, I’m a spoiled Patriots fan and I recognize that.
There’s always a few key teams that you can list off mid-season that are playoff threats to New England. Right now, there’s the Cowboys, Raiders, and maybe the Broncos, Chiefs and Falcons. Who knows, a NE-DAL Super Bowl might actually happen. As for the Raiders, I think we all know what happened the last time the Patriots faced Oakland in the playoffs. Pray for homefield advantage and a little snow, and the Pats are fine. Now, the Broncos are always a threat to New England, but that’s if they’re at home at Mile High, and with Peyton Manning. Denver struggles in Foxboro, and they’ve got a couple rookie QB’s and Austin Davis. Kansas City happens to be banged up right now, but can still probably make the playoff cut. Lastly, God knows about the Falcons. They’re legit, but they’ve only been to one Super Bowl and have a 7-12 all-time playoff record. If anything, they’re at least contenders. As long as New England is at home, they will win and breeze by right to Houston in February.
New England doesn’t have many teams to stress about come playoff time, if everything holds up and no teams come back from the dead. The Patriots are the best team in the league, with Dallas right behind them. Plus, the Cowboys might replace Dak Prescott with Romo, but who knows. That would make things easier for New England, for sure. The point is, the Super Bowl is the Patriots’ to lose, this year more than ever.
The Patriots will probably be the 1 seed in the AFC for the playoffs and will also get that first-round bye. Rex Ryan even said himself that the Pats have the division on lock. Yes, we’re only halfway through the season and there’s still much more football to be played before things get real, but let’s be honest. Many of New England’s usual threatening teams are bad this season, like the Steelers and Packers. The Patriots are making the rest of the league look laughable, and will only continue to do so from now until February. They’re the best overall team, and have no reason to not win it all. Yeah, the defense still hasn’t figured itself out quite yet, but I don’t think they have to play too much better, everything considered. The NFL sucks, and then there’s the Patriots. What a time to be alive.
