In case you haven't heard, the Patriots aren't happy enough exposing the corrupt NFL and winning Super Bowls, they're not satisfied unless they're saving lives. Patriots linebacker Darius Fleming played Saturday's game with 22 stitches in his right calf, after kicking in a car window to assist a woman after an accident.
Fleming was driving home from practice Thursday on Route 1, when a semi-truck stopped abruptly, causing a three car pile up behind it. Fleming said he didn't think the accident was serious at first, until he saw the woman crawling throughout the car and then saw smoke billowing from the accident. Turns out the smoke was just dust from the airbag, but that's beside the point. By the time Fleming got to the woman's car, she was trying to kick the window out, but he explained that she was a small woman and was not having any success.
"I didn't panic, but I was like 'I got to get her out', is how Fleming described his role in the accident. “I tried to break the window with my elbow, but that didn’t work, so I just started kicking the window. Eventually it broke, pulled her out, made sure she was OK, and I looked at my leg and I noticed it was bleeding pretty bad.”
Fleming went on to say that he didn't feel the pain in his leg until after the incident, when he noticed there was glass stuck in his calf and it was bleeding profusely. If you thought he would miss game time just because of a little glass, you'd be mistaken. Doctors threw a few stitches in his calf, and Fleming was good to go for Saturday. When Mayo and Collins went down with injuries, Fleming came in for 26 snaps and made 2 tackles.
There were no loud cheers when he took the field, no signs reading "Fleming for President" or "Marry Me Darius". If I know my Patriots players, this is the way he wanted it. He's just a humble guy doing the best he can, on and off the field. True heroes do not perform their feats for the fame and fortune, they do it because it's the right thing to do. This is the case with #53 on the Patriots roster.
I'm going to be honest, I've probably heard this guy's name about 4 times this entire season, but you're fooling yourself if you don't believe Fleming is the reason the Patriots won on Saturday. With all the nonsense that happened this week, it's easy to see how the Patriots could have become distracted and let the game slip away. However, the Patriots found their rally cry. They all looked at Fleming and suddenly all the distractions went away. They looked at their teammate and saw courage, perseverance and selflessness, then translated that into 27 points to send the Chiefs home.
So, next time you see #53 on the sidelines, give him a few extra cheers, because you have him to thank for the victory over Kansas City. More importantly, some young woman still has her life because a hero just happened to be driving up Route 1 at that exact moment. Regardless of your religion, you have to believe the Football Gods were looking down upon that young woman on that fateful Thursday.
