After a very busy start to the offseason, Sweet Donny Sweeny has calmed and slowed down with moves as of late. But the question that is still lurking around is who is going to be the new D man that they need, before the start of the season?
Enter Dustin Byfuglien. With the Jets having around $13 million in cap space, that soon is going to be a minimal number. Guys like Lowry, Trouba, Scheifele and a guy named Andrew Ladd all have to be re-signed for next year. The Jets could obviously wait it out until the deadline to trade Byfuglien, but that doesn't mean they have too. In fact, at this time, the return would probably be more than at the deadline.
With the Bruins losing guys like Lucic, Boychuk and Thronton the past few seasons, the team doesn't really sound like the "Big, Bad, Bruins" anymore. However thanks to Sweeny, this team is slowly on it's way back to putting fear into their opponents eyes.
With the Belesky deal and the Hayes trade, Sweeny made it clear that he was moving in the right direction. Now if he can manage a trade to get the 6'5" 265lbs powerhouse, I'd say that they have gotten their identity back. They need a big hard hitting defenseman who can also take on a forward type roles as well. They can't rely on older guys like Chara and Seids or even the young guys like Miller. Byfuglien usually gets 200+ hits a year and has had at least 45 points in 4 out of the last 5 seasons. With his slap shot and Chara's shot, goalies will be wearing extra padding every game.
What could be a trade possibility? Well, Lucic brought back a first rounder, starter-ready goalie Martin Jones and a top prospect in Colin Miller. So going by that, Byfuglien would obviously bring back even more to the Jets - I'd say he has more value than Looch. Winnipeg would want probably a top 6 forward, a first rounder, and possibly a prospect. Due to Byfuglien's contract, we would have to shed salary in the deal. A package deal of Loui Eriksson, one of the Bruin's two first rounders, and possibly an NHL ready prospect like Zach Trotman or Joe Morrow, would be a possibility. If it were me, I'd do what it would take to get the big man wearing Black and Gold and I think that Byfuglien would easily waive his no-trade clause (5 team no trade list each year) to come play in this great city.
Sweeny has pulled off some awesome moves I think already this off season. Getting rid of Reilly Smith and his brutal contract was great, especially with the local boy Jimmy Hayes coming back in the deal. The Belesky signing was good, he's a great player who loves to play with a "Bruins" type of style. Last but not least the Rinaldo deal, I believe is great. He's a gritty dirty player who hopefully can change his game around to avoid the penalties, but love the grit he brings.
Dustin Byfuglien would for sure be a better fit than free agents Cody Franson, Ehrhoff or Zidlicky. I say trade for Byfuglien or Shea Weber - if he's available.
