Recently the Red Sox signed OF Chris Young to a 2YR/13M deal to provide outfield depth. I have seen many people talk about how this signing may lead to a trade for one of the BBC members; Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr, Rusney Castillo. However, I do not see that at all. Young is a perfect platoon outfielder to make spot starts for one of those young outfielders from time to time. In no way should Young start Opening Day ahead of any of them.
Where Young will make his money is against lefties. Last year Young hit a robust .320 with a .578 slugging percentage against lefties. Who struggles against lefties? Jackie Bradley. I would not be surprised at all to see Young start a majority of the games against lefties and very few against righties, where he only hit .184 last year. Young should be able to provide decent power to the lineup that hopefully will not desperately need it as much as they did last year.
Within the last hour, Dombrowski and the Red Sox have made a trade. They sent Wade Miley and Jonathan Aro to the Mariners for Carson Smith and Roenis Elias. I think this is an amazing trade. Not even talking about how good Carson Smith is, Roenis Elias was a nice get as well. Elias will be a perfect long-reliever out of the pen, who can easily go multiple innings. A much more talented Craig Breslow if you will. Now onto the big get, Carson Smith.
Last season Carson Smith was only pitcher with groundball rate of at least 60% and K% of at least 32% (min 50 IP). Thats crazy good. He will fit in perfectly with Uehera, Tazawa and newly acquired Craig Kimbrel. The bullpen is now up their with the Royals, who rode their bullpen to the World Series. Pete will evaluate Smith in much greater detail tonight/tomorrow.
Things are looking up for the Red Sox, as I would imagine most fans expect a deep run in the playoffs this year despite last season's dud.
