Over the last few hours, we've heard all kinds of wild stories about what happened to Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones. From overdosing on cocaine or heroin, to a bad reaction to sleeping pills which caused him to sleepwalk. Of course all this was just speculation, and we're now starting to find out what actually happened.
Jones wanders into the Foxboro Police station without a shirt, Gronk misses practice and Belichick has a black eye. It's safe to say that it has been a very unusual week for New England. Some people have come up with crazy conspiracy theories, saying that all three of these incidents are connected. One theory is Jones overdosed on cocaine, broke into Gronkowski's house, Belichick came to investigate and Jones punched him in the eye. You can't make this stuff up.
While Bill's black eye is still a mystery to this point, we have gotten more information on the situations of Jones and Gronkowski. Chris Gasper, of the Boston Globe, is reporting that Gronkowski missed practice to deal with a minor ailment, and had no part in the Jones incident. This may actually serve as a good sign for the Patriots. There's no doubt Gronk has not looked like himself over the last few weeks, and the dwindling numbers can support that. Hopefully with the additonal rest, 87 will be back to his old self come Saturday afternoon.
As is turns out, Chandler Jones did not overdose on cocaine or any other drug. I still don't understand how an overdose was even in the discussion, seeing how Jones didn't miss any practices this week. I find it hard to believe he's foaming at the mouth the night before, and waking up in time for drills the next morning. Gasper initially reported that someone close to this situation claimed that Jones had a bad reaction to synthetic marijuana, which has recently been confirmed.
Synthetic marijuana is a designer drug that is meant to mimic the effects of cannabis. In short, it is a bunch of dangerous chemicals sprayed onto a plant. Many claim to use the synthetic marijuana because you can easily purchase it at a convenience store, and it does not show up on standard drug tests.
After the bad reaction, Jones took it upon himself to walk to the Foxboro Police station in order to alleviate the situation. The dispatch audio of the Foxoboro Police was made public, and one of the officers announces over the radio that Jones was involved with a class D substance, which includes marijuana.
“I’ve got his keys off the kitchen table. Was able to lock the front door, if you want to pass along to fire, he was definitely involved in Class D – delta before this happened, just so you know.”
So what now for Chandler Jones?
As for Saturday, we'll just have to wait and see if Jones gets the Welker treatment, and Belichick gives him a nice warm spot on the bench. I'd be shocked if smoking synthetic weed just days before a playoff game doesn't at least get you a slap on the wrist from Bill.
Since this is the first incident for Jones, the NFL will investigate what happened and determine whether or not he should be placed into a substance abuse program. A lot of people are claiming he will be suspended, but even if that were the case, it would not have any effect on this year. Suspensions often take a few weeks to determine, and even then, Jones could still appeal which, would push the process well beyond February 7th.
