Speechless. Absolutely speechless. What an absolutely disgusting showing by Danny Ainge at this year's NBA Trade Deadline. As I sit here, starting this article at 3:13 pm ET, The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that the Boston Celtics are making no moves, according to sources.
Absolutely sickening. The Celtics are currently 37-20, good for 3 GB of the Cavs for 1st in the Eastern Conference. But on paper, are the Celtics the second most talented team in the East? HELL NO! If I'm Danny Ainge, I'm currently crapping myself because Toronto got better, the Wizards are more talented on paper, and even the Hawks have a pretty good roster.
It's not even about the failure to acquire ANY of the big name guys that were available (Cousins, Butler, George), it is the failure to make ANY moves, whether that be for Nick Young, Andrew Bogut, Nerlens Noel, or even Nikola Freakin' Vucevic. The Celtics will roll into the playoffs with the same issues it began the season with; no rebounding (barring Bogut getting bought out and coming to Celtics), no sure fire thing in Avery Bradley or Marcus Smart in terms of health or production, and we all know Jae Crowder was terrible in the playoffs last year, albeit he was supposedly hurt.
This team is going ABSOLUTELY nowhere. And if one thing is for sure, Danny Ainge has now shown that he has absolutely no confidence that Isaiah Thomas is the ticket to bring this team to a championship. Damn good player, but he's not good enough. How do I know? The Celtics still have the Brooklyn picks, don't they? And in a PG heavy draft, where the top 2 players are PGs, and a VERY high probability of getting a top 2 pick, the Celtics will almost certainly go the route of point guard again. If not, it'll be SF Josh Jackson from Kansas, who has no real jump shot, and almost negates the drafting of Jaylen Brown in the last draft.
Ainge has no idea what he's doing, and it's scaring me. We see teams like Philly and the Lakers out there making moves to better their chances of winning in the future, while the Celtics front office continues to sit on their thumbs. It's disheartening and really is starting to concern me. I'll continue to root for my Celtics to the death, because I can't just leave the first team I fell in love with, especially since it's my hometown team. But something has to be done, whether with player personnel or front office personnel, if this team wants to contend in the future.
Oh, and to the Green Teamers out there who think talks will resume around the draft: No they won't. The Celtics have to make the money work in a deal to swing a Paul George or an Andre Drummond. You know? Guys like Tyler Zeller, Amir Johnson, and Jonas Jerebko are ALL expiring contracts that would've done wonders for a trade for a big time player with a heavy contract. Now, nothing will happen unless the Celtics overspend on an average player in a sign and trade. I just don't see that happening. Of course, they could always deal Horford, but no one wants a max deal for an average player.
Go Celtics, even though I think they're a first round exit yet again!
