This past offseason, the Celtics certainly made a lot of signings and a few trades as well. However, not a single one of these helped address the need for a rim protector at the Center position. Currently on the roster, Tyler Zeller is the only true Center and he is not a great rim protector by any stretch. Luckily, he is young and does have height, but only played 21.1 minutes per game and averaged 10.2 ppg and 5.7 rpg. He also isn’t the most athletic guy on the court and could use improvement. Nonetheless, having Zeller as the only guy on the roster is holding the team back from contention.
As I stated in an earlier article, the Celtics are in the second tier of Eastern Conference teams. Having a legitimate threat at center and a rip protector in my opinion is the missing link to the Celtics being in the top tier threshold of Eastern Conference teams. I feel that Danny Ainge needed to prioritize this during the offseason, but it appears we will have to make do with Zeller and other guys playing out of position for the time being. I still think there are a few things that could be done either before the season starts or at the beginning of this upcoming season that could push the Celtics to that next level.
1. Sign Larry Sanders: Although he is a bit of a head case, perhaps it is only a fluke and the guy still wants to play basketball. He would provide great athleticism for the starting center position and greatly improve our team rebounding and interior defense.
2. Sign Kevin Seraphin: He still remains unsigned and was an up and coming inside player for the Wizards last season. He may not be starting caliber right away, but could certainly be groomed into one, as he is still young.
3. Trade for Joel Embiid: Working with an organization as bad as the 76ers may be a no no because they keep claiming the need to have three extremely young centers on their roster for no reason, but I think the Celtics should pursue any of the three. I list Embiid because we probably wouldn’t have to give up as much to get him.
