Obviously there isn't a happy Bruins fan after Sweeny's moves in regards to Dougie, but you can't put the blame on him. Think about the situation he was put in. Up against the cap, has no room what so ever and is trying to fix this problem left by Chiarelli.
Dougie Hamilton is not worth what he is asking. Period. If you think so then you don't know the game. Dougie was obviously looking for somewhere in the range of above $6 million a year. Players like Doughty, Weber, Subban, Letang and Pietrangelo make 6.5 up to Subban's $9 million/year. Dougie Hamilton is not that caliber, yet.
Let's have a look and the top defensemen from last year:
The numbers don't lie. Krug was right there with Hamilton in the points aspect. He's only making $3.4 million this year. Brent Burns is making under $6 million a year and you can't tell me Hamilton is a better player than him. Yandle is only making $5.3, John Carlson is making around $4 million a year. Dougie is not worth that yet. The NHL is slowly turning into the MLB and unfortunately teams are paying young guys way to much money for what they are actually worth.
With fighting basically out of the league, hockey to me is on the downhill and this proves it. Players feeling way too entitled, getting overpaid and under performing is proof to me that the NHL is starting to creep away from hockey's roots and becoming more of a "marketable" sissy league full of entitled babies.
If Hamilton thinks he's worth a kings randsom and doesn't want to stay in one of the greatest sports cities in the world, then bye-bye. Of course he will be missed, however, now this gives the young hardworking blue collar guys like Zach Trotman a chance to prove that they are here, ready and willing to put themselves on the line everyday just for the opportunity to play the game they love at the highest level. You won't hear those guys complaining about their pay checks, I can guarantee you that.
I think Julien's remarks about younger players with little time in the league asking to be up there with the top guys is 100% right. Hamilton is worth around $5 million now. Lock him up for a back loaded deal worth $6-7 million in a few years with performance bonuses and your in great shape. Unfortunately he wants the moon now and what's even more unfortunate is that some team will pay him that. Just not the cash strapped, cap screwed Bruins.
Do I like the trade Sweeny made and the outcome of that trade? At the moment, no. But if they did lock up Dougie and he under preformed, due to the much added pressure on him, you would all be saying what the hell, we're paying him this much and he's under performing, what a bum.
Boston has enough over paid bums already. I'm not just talking hockey. The Red Sox are stuck with that problem right now and it's killing them.
Do I want Dougie on this roster? Of course, but do I want him on this roster with a cap hit of over $6 million a year? Absolutely not.
One can only hope Sweeny continues to make moves and improve this team, bringing in more grit and blue collar hard working guys, guys that are just like the people of this city, guys that are ready to put everything on the line for this team.
