Shortly after trading for Aaron Hill, the Red Sox have announced that they have acquired utility guy Michael Martinez from the Indians for cash considerations. Martinez had been designated for assignment by the Indians a few days ago.
Martinez is a 33-year-old utility player who hit .283/.306/.383 in 63 plate appearances with the Indians this year.
The Red Sox are slowly but surely addressing their depth needs in acquiring Aaron Hill and now Michael Martinez. These two signings may be an indication that the Sox are looking to fill their needs this season and continue to compete for a playoff spot. At the very least, Hill and Martinez will provide a few more options off the bench when they need they need it late in games.
