So it’s been a few months now since Revis bolted from the Super Bowl Champions for supposed “Greener Pastures” for a huge contract at $39 million guaranteed. Revis was essentially asking for the world and the Jets gave it to him with a gross overpayment. Looking back on the issue, its clear that his demands were extremely high and his value was peaking after coming off a Super Bowl victory. It was expected that he was going to possibly demand a huge contract, but as a loyal Pats fan I was hoping he would do the honorable thing and take less money to play for the best franchise in football and a shot at winning a Super Bowl every season. However, that is an extremely rare thing to do in the NFL (much more common in the NBA) and Revis spurned the Patriots organization to sign with the Jets.
I think its clear Revis doesn’t care at all about his legacy and winning. It is debatable even with some of the upgrades the Jets have made if they will even come close to making the playoffs. To me Revis is simply coasting through the rest of his career and collecting his last big paycheck.
At the end of the day I still think it may have been worth it to match whatever offer the Jets made to retain Revis. This is not realistic given the Patriots philosophy when it comes to free agents and overpaying for talent. It also would’ve been a burden financially on the team to give Revis the $70 million contract he got from the Jets. Despite this if I were making the decision I would’ve taken the risk and signed him. He can matchup with any receiver in the league and he gave the defense amazing flexibility that we simply no longer have in his absence.
With Brady and Revis together I think we not only would’ve been Super Bowl contenders for the next five years, but Super Bowl favorites and have definitely won 2-3 more Super Bowls. I’m not saying we still can’t achieve that goal, but having Revis would’ve certainly helped the cause. At the end of the day he is gone and quite frankly I believe our defense will do just fine without him. I look forward to crushing his joke of a team next season.
Go Pats! #Freebrady
