So this season the Celtics have a plethora of guards and this means they will be very deep at the position. Most of them are young and talented, but none of them have made an all-star appearance yet. An interesting question is who is the best? And how do they stack up against each other.
Although last season he came off the bench, he was the best scorer on both the team and backcourt last season. He averaged 16.4 ppg in limited minutes at around 25.8 per game. Despite his size, he can shoot, drive to the hoop and play decent perimeter defense. He has strong dribbling skills and can also run the offense.
Smart had a pretty solid rookie season especially after Rondo got traded. He has great size and a great physical presence that is nice to have at the position. He has shown great playmaking ability and I think has a strong future as this teams starting point guard. I expect his season stats to rise tremendously this season averaging at least double digits in scoring and at least six assists.
Evan Turner was the number 2 overall pick in the 2010 draft. Many coaches have not been able to figure his game out. Brad Stevans did however and he was a major factor for the Celtics last season. He is a playmaker and despite being the size of a forward many actually consider him a point guard. He uses his size to his advantage against smaller guards and can get to the rim at will. His three point shot is also a solid weapon.
AB has been a solid defensive specialist throughout his career in Boston. He plays the best perimeter defense in the game and gives opposing guards even bigger guards a tough time night in and night out. His offense is solid although his three point shooting is suspect and has varied each season he has been in the league.
The Celtics first round pick was somewhat of a question mark immediately upon being picked. He is nearly a replica of Avery Bradley and many wondered why we drafted him in the first place. I think it will be interesting to see what he can do and see if he can distinguish himself from Bradley and carve a role out in the rotation for this team next season.
