Tiger’s final round at the Hero World Challenge was a struggle to say the least. Fortunately, Tiger showed his ability to grind and fight and was able to respond to poor shots and errors. For example, after making a bogey on the 5th, and a double on the par 5 6th, Tiger made 3 consecutive birdies to salvage an even par front 9. Tiger threw away these birdies quickly on the back. He went bogey, double, bogey over his next 3 holes to drop back to +4. Again, Tiger fought back and birdied 14 and 15. Now standing on 18 at +2, Tiger sprayed his tee shot into the waste area right of the fairway. From here, he found the water with his second shot to set up a double bogey finish and, consequently, a 76. Tiger finished the Hero World Challenge at -4 overall, good for 15th place. Not the best finish for Tiger, but he played 4 competitive rounds of golf without showing any signs of injury.
Tiger donated his entire paycheck to his own foundation after the round. Class act there, Tiger.
The good: Tiger made the most birdies out of anyone in the field. He made 24 total, which is definitely a good takeaway as Tiger continues to move forward on his comeback.
The bad: Hole number 18 had Tiger’s number all week. Out of the four rounds, Tiger made double bogey 3 times! That’s 6 shots lost on just 1 hole. If Tiger were able to make par each round, he would have been 10 under par, which would have been good for a top 10 finish.
What needs work: It seems like Tiger has always struggled with his driver and with his return, his struggles off the tee are alive and well. This week, Tiger switched to a Taylormade M1 driver. Changing equipment is never an easy process, but this cannot be an excuse for Tiger. The good news is that Tiger is mainly missing to the left. A one-way miss like this is not the worst thing in the world. With more time and practice, look for Tiger to work out his issues.
Final Note: Tiger began the week ranked 898 in the Official World Golf Rankings. He leaves the Bahamas ranked 321. Not bad for a week's work. This ranking is important because only the top ranked players in the world have access to certain events, such as The World Golf Championships. Tiger will need to crack the top 100 in order to be eligible for these events. The first WGC event, The Dell Matchplay, is held in March. Tiger has some work to do if he wants to play in this event.
