After an underwhelming series against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Red Sox went out and knocked the doors off of the Baltimore Orioles behind a fantastic complete game by Steven "The Ace" Wright. On the season, Wright has managed to amass an ERA of 2.45, which is one of the best in baseball, after striking out seven, walking five, and allowing two earned runs.
Tonight, the Red Sox send Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound to make his 2016 MLB debut. After injuring his knee in Spring Training, Rodriguez took longer than anticipated to return to pitching, but has dazzled at times in Triple-A Pawtucket. Because the velocity is still not there, E-Rod will need to have better command of the strike zone and mix up his pitches in order to be effective against one of the better teams in the American League. Against his former team, Rodriguez is 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA in three career starts.
The Baltimore Orioles will also be strutting out a hard-throwing young prospect, as Kevin Gausman will be taking the mound looking to build off of a strong start to the regular season. Gausman is currently 0-2 with a 3.24 ERA, but has struck out at least six batters in three of his last four starts. Most recently, Gausman fanned seven Houston Astros, but gave up four runs in five innings and ultimately took the loss.
In what is one of the more important series in the young 2016 season, look for both teams to come out motivated and ready to knock the cover off of the baseball.
