Many people think that the Patriots will probably not draft a wide receiver in the first round, but giving Tom Brady a vertical wide receiver in the last couple years of his career would be a huge help. Tom Brady has not had a vertical threat quite like the ability of Dorial Green-Beckham since Randy Moss. Lets take a more in depth look at Green-Beckham and see if he is an actual option for the defending World Champs.
In short, this kid is an absolute freak. Green-Beckham is an outstanding physical specimen. Green-Beckham stands at 6'5 and weighs 237 pounds. Wow. Although he is absolutely massive, it does not seem to effect his speed. In the NFL Combine this week, Green-Beckham dazzled NFL scouts with an impressive 4.49 40 yard dash, 33.5 inch vertical, and 119 inch broad jump. Again, wow. Green-Beckham has the unique ability to "put it into second gear" and blow by defensive backs with his long strides. Green-Beckham also has the abilities to bring down those "wow catches." He has soft hands and can contort his body in the air to catch balls that are not necessarily thrown perfectly.
However, Green-Beckham does have some weakness. His routes are more "rounded" than hard cuts to create separation from the defense. But to a more pressing matter, his work ethic and "problem child" mentality has come into issue. At Missouri, Green-Beckham was suspended and arrested twice for marijuana-related incidents. After an alleged burglary incident, Green-Beckham was not able to play for the entire 2014 season. There was also suspicion that he was involved in an incident at Missouri for pushing a woman down a flight of stairs, yet charges were never filed.
NFL executives seem to think that he is an exceptional athlete, yet would be surprised if he is drafted before the third day. There is no question that he is a phenomenal athlete. If he is able to keep his head on straight, he could be a very special player in the NFL. After everything that has happened in the past year with Josh Gordon and Ray Rice, I think teams may be more cautious than they have been in the past.
However, that should not turn the Patriots off from drafting the athletic wide receiver. Bill Belichik has a very well known reputation for taking in troubled players and setting them straight. The Patriots have the structure in the locker room to keep him in line, while also having the depth at the position to gamble on a potential superstar. If it was up to me, I would draft Green-Beckham. I would have to think about drafting him in the first round, but if he is sitting there when the Patriots have their late first round pick, I would probably pull the trigger.
