It's that time of the year again! I will be highlighting some of the players I would like the Patriots to pick in this year's draft. We have already highlighted some players and reported some private work outs, so be sure to follow us for updates! On the right hand side of this page, the "2016 NFL Draft" category will keep track of all potential Patriots players.
Is it hot in here or is it just me?
I'm not going to sugarcoat it, I love Derrick Henry. I think he could quietly be one of the best players taken in this draft. At 6-foot-3, 247 pounds, he is one of the bigger, more violent, running backs you will see in the modern-day NFL. Last season, Henry led the nation in missed tackles forced with 60. While he can change direction and make defenders miss, similar to LeGarrette Blount, Henry is a north-to-south runner that can get the extra yard or two. However, that does not deter his speed, as he ran a 4.54 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. While his initial burst won't break the sound barrier, as he reaches that second and third gear, he has more than capable speed to be an effective back in the NFL.
The only major negative, in my opinion, of Henry is the fact that he has had a massive workload in the best division in college football. Last season, Henry averaged close to 32 carries per game, while amassing close to 400 carries for the season. Additionally, Henry has the tendency to try and make a big play when nothing is there and get eaten up in the backfield.
Nonetheless, Henry has the ability to be an every down back. With no clear future at the running back position, the Patriots could and should do what is necessary in order to get Henry in red, white and blue next season. Henry is slated to come off the board sometime in the second round, so the Patriots could trade one of their two second round picks in order to move up if they identify him as a future cornerstone for the New England Patriots.
