With the NBA Lottery Selection in less than two weeks, teams are starting to let it be known that top players in the NBA could be available for the right price this summer. With the Celtics slated to almost-certainly get a top 3 pick, they could look to trade out of the position for a proven NBA star.
Lets take a look at some of the most recent, and surprising, rumors surrounding the Celtics...
Jimmy Butler, SG/SF, Chicago Bulls: This rumor is not a huge surprise. The Celtics and Bulls were reportedly closing in on a mega-deal at the Trade Deadline that would have sent Marcus Smart, Jae Crowder and Brooklyn's 2016 first round pick to Chicago for Jimmy Butler. However, the Celtics did not want to part with Crowder and the deal fell through, which, in my opinion, is idiotic. Nevertheless, with reports coming out of Chicago that Butler and the Bulls are looking to move on from each other yet again, the Celtics should, and probably already have, contact(ed) ChiTown.
DeMarcus Cousins, PF/C, Sacramento Kings: Cousins-to-the-Celtics rumors? No way! Well, the Kings have reportedly made Cousins available after contemplating this move for the better part of this entire season. Cousins is one of the best big men in the league, but has always had an attitude problem. With a change of scenery and Brad Stevens as his coach, Cousins could blossom into one of the best players in the NBA. Additionally, Cousins-to-Boston fuels the Kevin Durant scenario (See Below.) that everyone in Boston is salivating about.
Kevin Durant, SG/SF/Pretty Much Every Position, Oklahoma City Thunder (Impending Free Agent): Normally, I would not even put this type of rumor on here, but no one seems to be extinguishing this fire, and it's burning like hell. After the Celtics were eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of the Atlanta Hawks in six games, rumors about Kevin Durant sitting down with the Celtics this offseason began almost instantaneously. Additionally, Kevin Durant isn't like most superstars. He seems to care about the history of the NBA and winning championships more than being in a warm climate with a great nightlife. I'm not saying KD is coming to Boston, but just keep an eye on this one.
Al Horford, PF/C, Atlanta Hawks (Impending Free Agent): Like Jimmy Butler, the Celtics were reportedly in on Horford at the Trade Deadline. However, unlike Butler, Horford is a free agent and could be on the move this offseason. I do not believe that Horford would be enough to entice a player like Kevin Durant to come to Boston, but it is definitely a step in the right direction. Additionally, I'm not sure if I am the only one, but I feel that Horford was exposed towards the end of the season, and specifically in their series against our Boston Celtics. Because he is almost certainly going to command a max contract, the Celtics need to identify if he could be a member of a Big 3.
