There is no mistaking that Joe Kelly has electric stuff. In my weekly Radio Show on Monday, I talked about how much Joe Kelly reminds me of Clay Buchholz. He has all the stuff, but for some reason he just cannot sustain being successful.
Joe Kelly can throw a baseball close to 100 mph, but gets absolutely shelled almost every outing. It seems that Kelly is going good for the first 3 or 4 innings, but then the other team locates his fastball and launches it into orbit.
To me, that is why the Red Sox should try Joe Kelly out as a closer.
I know that they have Koji, Tazawa, and even Cook as closers, but Kelly has the raw stuff to be electric. If he goes out there and throws the baseball as fast as he can for 1 innings, he could be a very dominant closer.
With the possibility of getting Craig Kimbrel or Aroldis Chapman dwindling, the Red Sox are going to need to address the closer role sooner rather than later. Koji is a free agent after the end of last season, but they will also need some protection incase he does not come back as the same player after his broken wrist.
Make it happen, Farrell. I wouldn't want you to have a hernia. (too soon?)
