Last night, the Celtics pummeled the New York Knicks. Although the Celtics and Knicks were going back and forth up until the middle of the 3rd quarter, Boston was able to put it in another gear after Isaiah Thomas made 2 free throws with a little bit over 2 and a half minutes to play in the third. Boston went on a 20-0 run and the Knicks never recovered. However, thats nothing interesting. The Knicks are one of, if not the worst, team in the NBA. Their 10-46 record gave the Celtics hope that they could easily secure another win and continue to make a strong push for the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference.
With a 72-71 deficit, Brad Stevens inserted an extremely small lineup. Stevens subbed in Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart and Avery Bradley to man the back court in a three guard rotation. Jae Crowder and Jonas Jerebko manned the back court, in what could be one of the smallest lineups in the NBA. Although small, the lineup features an impressive combination of skill and toughness that overcomes some physical weaknesses. While this lineup is in, it seems that there is excellent ball movement and good spread throughout the court. The Celtics, if all things stand, will have the ability to outrun teams because of their quickness.
To be perfectly honest, though, Brad Stevens was not really expecting this lineup to have the amount of success that they have had.
“I’m going to sit up here like I have answers, but I don’t,” Stevens said, smiling. “We’re just throwing darts.”
Well, I guess Stevens should start playing the lottery because he seems like one lucky guy. The Celtics have won 6 out of their last 9 games and are making an extremely strong push to make it into the playoffs. Once they are in the playoffs, they will probably be a one and done, but at least they are making strides. I do not think that it is good to tank year in and year out like Philadelphia and LA have been doing. They tanked, drafted a very good player in Marcus Smart, and are now making great strides towards the future. If they are able to continue to develop their young players and pick up a couple more pieces, including a quality big man, this team could make a lot of noise in the next couple of years.
Things are looking up for Celtics and everyone watching this team should be excited for the future. At least thats more than we can say about the Bruins at this point.
