When Les Miles was fired by the LSU Tigers in September, no one in the country thought interim head coach Ed Orgeron would even be considered for the permanent job as LSU conducted its coaching search. With the program being such a coveted job and Coach O not being a big-name candidate, he was thought by many to simply be a place holder until the Tigers could hire their next star coach.
But, here we are in late November, and Ed Orgeron has been named as the next head coach of the historic program. In his time as the interim, the Tigers finished the 2016 campaign with a 6-2 record.
Like I said, when Coach O first took over, not many fans thought of him as a legitimate candidate. But as the weeks passed, this fanbase absolutely fell in love with their new coach. He is from Louisiana, he loves the school and it's players, and he cares about nothing other than seeing this team succeed. He is completely selfless, and has made it clear from day one that everything is about the team, not any one individual.
On top of that, many of us have come to realize that he is indeed the best coaching candidate to lead this program going forward. Sure, guys like Tom Herman and Jimbo Fisher are far superior to Orgeron from a purely blackboard, X's and O's standpoint, but his unique CEO-like approach is something that I think will benefit the Tigers greatly as they try to transition out of this previous era.
What Coach O has done beautifully is just getting out of his assistants' hair. He realizes he isn't any kind of schematic genius, so he doesn't try to be force anything and be what he is not. Instead, he gives input, oversees the operation, and leaves the play calling and scheming to the guys who get paid to do just that. He motivates his team and makes sure that everyone is working in unison towards the same goal, all while delegating his weaknesses to those who can turn them into strengths.
With the best defensive coordinator in college football in Dave Aranda on his staff, and the determination and resources the school is using to bring in a top-notch offensive coordinator for next season, Orgeron is the perfect guy to captain this staff. If they are able to keep Aranda and get an elite OC like most people expect them to do, Coach O can rely on those guys to craft game plans while he leads this team. It may not have been the sexiest of hires, but it sure was the right one.
