Dustin Johnson finally got the monkey off his back two weeks ago by winning his first career major. It was a longtime coming for the 6-foot-4 golfer. Johnson kept his hot streak going this past week by winning the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. Johnson shot a 4-under 66 to beat a faltering Jason Day. Day struggled on his Sunday back 9 to surrender the victory. He finished bogey, double, par, bogey, or +4 over his last 4 holes. This equated to a final round 72.
With the win, Johnson is now ranked as the number 2 golfer in the Official World Golf Rankings. Johnson is hot at the right time of the season. Golf’s third major is already just 2 weeks away. DJ has now won 11 tournaments in 9 years on tour. Jason Day may have given away a sure victory, but he is another golfer to watch at the Open later this month.
The PGA Tour is off this week due to the cancelation of the Greenbriar Classic. Old White TPC, which is located in West Virginia, sustained heavy flood damage last month. The damage forced organizers to cancel the tournament and relocate the final qualifying for the Open Championship. However, there is a pretty big tournament this week oversea’s in Europe. Many golfers instead play in the Scottish Open as a final tune up for the Open. Phil Mickelson is expected to compete along with Henrik Stenson and Patrick Reed.
