Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard recorded a new rap song for the NBA’s celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Released under the name, “Dame D.O.L.L.A,” the song opens up with clips from CNN showing protesters in Ferguson, Missouri. It shows a chaotic scene with police officers in riot gear.
The track then shifts to themes of religion, optimism, and endearment. The song is titled “Bigger than Us” and features Swedish singer Paul Rey.
The track premiered prior to the TNT primetime matchup between the Warriors and Cavaliers. The NBA had 10 games scheduled along with 4 nationally televised games on the biggest Monday on the NBA calendar.
Damian Lillard is not new to making rap songs. In fact, he also released a song in July 2015 called “Soldier in the Game.” I frequently listen to rap music and rate Lillard’s most recent song a 7.5/10.
The song has an upbeat rhythm and powerful lyrics. It also features a catchy hook/chorus. Overall, Lillards “Bigger than Us” is a great song from someone who views music as a side project. The song is available for purchase on iTunes.
