Yeah, we know Berry and Poe are free agents. We are listening and reacting to what he said, not proposing anything new. And yes, this is an insane proposition. But we are going to continue on like this is a legitimate rumor.
The NFL Divisional playoffs have come and gone. We've seen upsets galore, with both the Cowboys and the Chiefs bidding farewell to the 2016-17 season, and we saw the New England Patriots struggle and STILL cover a historic spread vs. the number one ranked Texans defense. But as far as giving us something to talk about in the next week before Championship Sunday, it's safe to say Fox Sports host of "The Herd," Colin Cowherd, has stirred the pot a little bit. Coming up with a MASSIVE trade that would shake up the football world.
This trade involves two of the elite teams in the NFL. In fact, they had the 2 best records in the AFC: The Patriots and the Chiefs.
Cowherd, reacting to this weekend's KC/Pitt matchup, said that the Chiefs have basically peaked with Alex Smith and now need a franchise QB in order to get them further than the Divisional playoffs and become an imminent threat in the NFL for a Super Bowl.
The trade he proposed:
A first round pick, Travis Kelce, Eric Berry, and Dontari Poe
This trade is absolutely STACKED with talent. We all saw what Jimmy G could do in his limited time at the helm of the New England Patriots offense. He's going to be a VERY good quarterback for years to come, and when it comes to the Kansas City Chiefs, they need an elite QB to help bring them to the promise land. Moral victories in sports are the worst, the Chiefs and their fan base have to be sick of being the Los Angeles Dodgers of the NFL. They simply can't win in the playoffs,
By bringing in these 3 players in return for Jimmy Garoppolo, the Patriots have officially become a juggernaut for easily the next 5 years. It also makes a guy like Rob Gronkowski even more expendable than he already is. Kelce is a top 3 tight end in the NFL (1st this year considering he was the healthiest) and while he may not block as well as Gronk, he can catch with the best of them for sure.
As for Eric Berry, what a story this guy is. He underwent treatment for cancer in December of 2014, and has come back and not skipped a beat. He's probably the best safety in the NFL, and paired with D-Mac could give teams fits for a while. Berry is a ball-hawker and is definitely not a bad tackler by any means. In fact, he's a monster and can really lay the boom on the ball carrier.
Onto the third player: Dontari Poe. Now he, believe it or not, is a throw in on this deal. The Patriots are already stout up the middle with Branch and Brown, but Poe is no joke. He'd step in and play an immediate role in the run game, and can even throw the ball a bit, as shown in the Chiefs/Broncos at the end of the season.
So for the backup QB, the Patriots upgrade their secondary, their TE position (especially if Bennett re-signs), and their interior defensive line. Absolutely disgusting, and the Patriots would be shaping up to go on an absolute tear into the 2020s.
