Last Thursday on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher and Rich, Celtics President of Basketball Ops, Danny Ainge, discussed his views on the future of the Boston Celtics. He talked at length about bringing a superstar to Boston, then made a very interesting statement.
According to Ainge, the Celtics would be willing to move the Brooklyn Nets pick(s) for the contract of an expiring elite player.
Pretty bold statement by Trader Danny. Just now, almost instantaneously, Celtics Nation had to google the free agent class of 2016. Well here it is, kind of:
Kevin Durant, Unrestricted FA
Lebron James, Player Option
Andre Drummond, Restricted FA
Dwight Howard, Player Option
Al Horford, Unrestricted FA
In short, the list is really friggen' long. I don't think anyone believes that Lebron James is going anywhere, and, while players like Drummond, Howard, and Horford are nice, I don't think that they are going to take the court every night with the expectation of scoring 30 points.
But notice that guy at the very top? Remember him?
Kevin Durant has been injured the past couple of seasons, but it looks as if he has finally shaken off the injury bug and has returned to form as one of the best players in the NBA.
Kevin Durant, who is a native of Washington DC, is said to be extremely interested in joining his hometown Washington Wizards. Along with the East Coast team(s), the Golden State Warriors and, of course, the Los Angeles Lakers are said to be high on his hypothetical destination list.
However, there is another option. An option that, to most NBA fans, would seem to be more of a pipe dream than an actual possibility:
The Boston Celtics.
While there is absolutely no chance that Kevin Durant chooses to come to Boston via free agency, there is a possibility that the Celtics work out a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the former Texas Longhorn superstar.
Like I already said, the Celtics have a plethora of trade assets that are brewing in the proverbial trade pot.
Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley, the 2016, 2017, and 2018 Brooklyn Picks, contract fillers like Amir Johnson and David Lee, the list goes on and on.
It is time to see if Danny Ainge can put Wyc's money where his mouth is. Is he actually serious about taking a flyer on a player of Durant's caliber? Do the Celtics think they can convince Durant to sign a contract extension, or is he just a rental for a potential Championship run?
Time will tell.
