Less than 24 hours ago, there were rumblings about Danny Ainge considering a “Big and Powerful” move. This story was first broken via Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald and later expanded on by Pat Bradley of NESN.com. There were not any specific details about who would be moved or what teams would be involved, but I caution Celtics fans not to get their hopes up too soon. Over the years, Danny has claimed many things including during the 2015 draft back in June that there would be fireworks and a major trade was going to be made. As we all know, he failed to deliver on that and we were left with some puzzling draft picks. There has also been some trade deadlines where “Trader Danny” has failed to make any significant changes specifically during the Big Three Era.
I personally think he might be blowing hot air and trying to gauge interest from other teams about doing a deal, but I doubt he has had any real contact with other general managers about this major deal. Additionally, the way this team is currently constructed, I do not see a clear trade package that would be able to net a superstar. We do have some young pieces, but I really don’t know how much Avery Bradley, Jared Sullinger and Marcus Smart would get the Celtics in trade value.
They have a plethora of draft picks, but oddly enough, Ainge has not dealt hardly any so far. I personally am looking forward to seeing the team improving this season, raising the stock of some of its younger players and maybe doing a deal next summer or signing a major impact free agent. I don’t think the team should be rushing to make any kind of major moves right now. I don’t want Ainge to make a deal just because he feels he has to make one. I think its better to wait for the right deal to come along where, he can negotiate well and have the Celtics be the winners of the hypothetical deal.
